The photos to take at the scene of an accident

Written by SAR Group Editorial TeamReviewed by Repair Support Team 4 min read · Updated 2026

Photographs are the cheapest insurance you will ever have. Two minutes at the scene can settle a liability argument months later. Here is the shot list we wish every driver used.

Example of a wide photograph showing the whole vehicle and the road around it
1. Wide shot: whole vehicle, road markings and surroundings for context.
Example of a 45 degree angle photograph showing the damaged corner of a car
2. Mid-range at 45 degrees: damaged area plus the undamaged panels beside it.
Example of a close-up photograph of a cracked and scratched bumper
3. Close-up: sharp, well lit, filling the frame with the damage itself.
Example of a photograph showing the rear number plate area of a vehicle
4. Identifiers: number plates of every vehicle involved, front and rear.

The essential shot list

Work outwards: damage first, then vehicles, then the scene as a whole.

  • Close-ups of every damaged area on your vehicle.
  • Close-ups of the damage to the other vehicle.
  • Both number plates, clearly readable.
  • A wide shot showing both vehicles in their final positions.
  • The road layout: lane markings, signage, traffic lights, junction.
  • Skid marks, debris and broken glass on the road surface.
  • Weather, light and road conditions.

Details people forget

Photograph the other driver's insurance certificate or details if they are willing to show them, and note the exact time and location. If a witness stops, take their name and number, they rarely come back later.

  • Nearby CCTV cameras, doorbell cameras or shop fronts.
  • Bus lane and parking signage that shows who had priority.
  • Your own dashcam file, save and back it up before it loops over.

What to do with them afterwards

Back the images up somewhere other than your phone the same day, and keep them together with a short written account of what happened. Send copies to whoever is handling your repair so nothing has to be recreated from memory.
